Dear Parents, Guardians and Caregivers
Last week the Grades 3-6s participated in the Senior Athletics Day. The day was a great success- thanks to all the students for their enthusiastic participation, to the parents for their support and to those who came along to watch and special thanks to Mrs Michelle Richards who organised and coordinated the whole event and Ms Courtney Blair and the Mary MacKillop CRC students who came along to help run the events. It was wonderful to see the students celebrating, not only each other's successes but also encouraging their peers in their attempts at the events. Thank you to the staff and parents who spent time preparing students to be a ‘Good Loser’ and a ‘Gracious Winner’. (There will be another opportunity to practice these skills this week at our annual Easter Raffle!)
I would also like to express sincere gratitude to all the families who donated prizes for our Easter Raffle and bought tickets. This is such a successful fundraiser for our school. The raffle will be drawn in front of all the students and staff this Wednesday afternoon, March 31. Due to COVID restriction considerations, the prizes have been placed in plastic bags.
On March 19 we celebrated St Joseph's Day. The whole school attended Mass (sorry we were unable to invite parents due to density quotient restrictions). Each level learned a little more about St Joseph, the loving, caring father to Jesus as we celebrated our school’s name day.
For the last few years we have been working on including Christian Meditation into our Morning Prayer routines. Christian Meditation is practised at least twice weekly in every classroom with the emphasis being on spending quiet time actively welcoming God’s presence into our lives. The students are encouraged to use a mantra: Maranatha (Ma-ra-na-tha) which means, ‘Come Lord Jesus’. Using a mantra helps to clear the mind from other distractions and concerns so that a level of openness and tranquility can be experienced. After the meditation staff have noted that there is an atmosphere of peace and harmony. All classes are working on slowly increasing the time they can meditate as a group successfully.
For your information:
As part of the evolution of the Diocese of Sale Catholic Education Limited (DOSCEL), the Catholic Education Office Sale will now be known as the DOSCEL Secretariat.

You will have received some information about SIMON, a learning management and operation system which is the platform we are transitioning to over the course of this year. I encourage you to set up your account when you receive the email invitation. We are currently using SIMON to mark the roll. Once your account is set up you will be able to use the Parent Access Module to enter your child/rens absences online.
As this is the last newsletter for this term I would like to wish everyone a happy and holy Easter. Thank you for all your wonderful support over this term! I hope everyone is able to spend some special time with their families and enjoy the Easter and school holiday break. Please take care!
Lunchtime Clubs for Term 2
As well as the usual Lunchtime club held in the library each day, next term we will be offering:
Mondays: Knitting Club with Mrs Martin,
Tuesdays: STEAM Club with Mrs Buccilli
Wednesdays: Skipping with Mrs Bertacco
Thursdays: Music with Ms Paulson
Fridays: Fundamental Movement Skills for P-2s with Mrs Richards
Grade 6 students will be assisting with running these clubs.
If any parents or friends would like to assist with these clubs, please contact the school office. The clubs run for about 30 minutes over the lunch period between 1.45 and 2.15pm. There is a process that needs to be followed before parents/friends can volunteer so the earlier you contact the office, the sooner we can arrange for this.

Acting Principal
The grade 1/2 students have been learning about time.
We have been making calendars by identifying what day the month starts and ends, and how many days are in each month.
We are learning about months of the year and what seasons the months fall under. We have been practicing some actions for each of the seasons to help us remember this.
In religion we have been learning about the Last Supper and the events of Holy Week.
1/2 Team
It’s been very busy for the Grade 3’s and 4’s lately.
On the 17th of March it was St Patrick's Day. Two days later it was the Feast of St Joseph and the National Day of Action Against Bullying. We made chatterboxes for what to do when you see someone or you get bullied. We also celebrated St Joseph by making a card with a prayer.
All the Grade 4’s have been practising the Stations Of The Cross play. Everyone is enjoying and getting better at it every time. The Grade 3’s have been making a stained glass window for each station.
Recently the Grade 3’s made the sacrament of Reconciliation, everyone was excited by this event.
Last Tuesday the Grade 3 to 6 students had the Senior Athletics Day. There was cheering, smiles, encouragement and winners. Everyone tried their best and worked hard.
These past weeks have been exciting and busy. There were many opportunities for all of us to be involved. Everyone has worked hard, persisting while also having a lot of fun.

The Grades 3-6 students helped us all commemorate the Stations of the Cross on Monday morning. A big thank you to all the students and staff that put in a great effort, you all did a wonderful job!
Congratulations to our grade 3 students who received the Sacrament of First Reconciliation.
Senior House Athletics Carnival
The rain held out for us and we managed to hold a very successful Senior House Athletics Carnival on Tuesday March 23.
Student's ran, threw and jumped their way across 7 events, and were very supportive of their classmates' efforts and successes. Well done to all students for giving it their best, and having a go. A big thank you to Mary Mackillop who provided assistance on the day, it was nice to see some past students back to help out. It was also fantastic to be able to welcome parents back as spectators. Thank you for supporting your children. Some students will now move forward to the District Athletics Championships which will be held early next term.
House champion and age group champions will be announced at assembly next term.

National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence
On Friday March 19 we recognised the National Day of Action Against Bullying by getting together across the school to complete valuable learning activities to promote awareness.
Every year, each college from RMIT University selects 1 nominee for the Patricia Guthrie Award and a total of 3 nominees are interviewed.
This award is presented to a female with outstanding academic achievement, in addition to strong community development both within and outside of RMIT. Last week, our Graduate, Rebecca Nielsen was announced the winner of this award. She was the first person in 30 years, from the College of Education to receive this award. Rebecca graduated from her teaching degree with 1st class honours (the highest degree possible) which supported her academic achievement. In her interview, she spoke about her contribution to the community within her previous roles at the Australian Red Cross where she supported Asylum Seekers, as well as the Make-A-Wish Foundation where she granted wishes of children with a life threatening illness. Through these roles, Rebecca also supported her colleagues from around the world to get the best outcomes. In addition to this, she spent a year volunteering for a school in Tanzania, Africa where she improved a program for student sponsorship to ensure all students have access to education. She also discussed her contributions and their impact on student life and assessments within RMIT. In her closing statement, she spoke about the importance of inclusive education and how this can benefit all students in the class. Rebecca is passionate about inclusive education and is working towards becoming a leading example of how this can be done well to support all students to experience success in the classroom, but more importantly, success in life. Congratulations Rebecca on all you hard work! We are thrilled to have you teaching at our school.

Dear Parents Guardians and Carers,
We are anticipating to begin the rollout of SIMON in the beginning of Term 2. Each family will receive an invitation by email to setup an account, to begin with we will use the Parent Access Module for families to enter their child/rens absences online. The Minister for Education, The Hon. James Merlino, has approved a requirement to pre-emptively close education facilities listed as Category 4 on the bushfire/grassfire at risk register on days declared as ‘Code Red’ in each weather district.
In previous years, schools at risk of grassfires were not required to close on ‘Code Red’ days. However, based on lessons learned from the 2019/2020 bushfire season it has been determined that all schools on the register will now close on these days. This provides a consistent approach to school closures within Victoria and will protect and preserve the lives of students, staff and education communities.
St Joseph's Primary School Wonthaggi is listed on the bushfire/grassfire register and in accordance with these changes we will be required to pre-emptively close on Code Red days.
St Joseph's Primary School - Orbost, current enrollment 36, requires a classroom teacher, Year 3&4, Monday-Thursday, Term 2-Term 4. Further information available from the school office on 5154 1289. Letters of application and resumes to be emailed to principal, mdodson@stjorbost.catholic.
Please pray for those who have passed due to the Covid-19 Virus. For Bridie Hoare (Father Pat Walsh’s sister) and Denis Wallace who have passed away recently and the anniversary of Irene Hanily, our own loved ones and the Souls who have no one to pray for them. May God’s merciful love shine on them and on their loved ones left behind.

HOLY LAND COLLECTION-GOOD FRIDAY APRIL 2ND 2021
The annual collection for the support of the church in the Holy Land will take place on Good Friday, April 2nd. This collection promotes the missionary work of the Church in the Holy Land by providing welfare assistance to local Christians in areas such as health, education, employment and housing. Parishes, schools, orphanages and medical centres throughout the Holy Land also rely on assistance from this collection. It is also used to maintain over 70 churches and shrines associated with the life of Jesus. Last year, due to the global pandemic, it was an extremely difficult time for the Church and people of the Holy Land with very little income due to the lack of pilgrims and the closure of churches around the world. Despite this, Australian Catholics did manage to donate $406,000 (compared to the $1.3 million in 2019). This year, the Holy Land will continue to face an extreme shortfall in income due to the ongoing effects of the pandemic and so we are urging Catholics around the world to be as generous as possible. Please remember the Christians of the Holy Land on Good Friday and please keep them in your prayers. Thank you.
Envelopes are available at St. Joseph’s Wonthaggi and Our Lady Star of the Sea, Inverloch.

The Liturgical Press has just released a simple prayer resource for families during the Easter Season.
The Easter season comprises the most important weeks of the liturgical year, but observance of the season in parishes and homes often doesn’t reflect its significance. Easter Mealtime Prayers for the Family brings Easter from the altar table to the family table—an easy, effective step for family observance. This simple prayer resource provides the “domestic Church” with a means to cherish together the living faith we celebrate throughout the Easter season. Available in e-book form
