Dear Parents, Guardians and Caregivers
Last week the staff participated in professional development around the implementation of the Religious Education curriculum. We were very fortunate to have Dom Ryan, who is the manager of Catholic Identity and Religious Education, DOSCEL, speak to us. Dom reminded us that we want the students to realise that they are invited to have a relationship with God. God is revealed to us in many ways: through Jesus, scripture, the traditions of the church, prayer, other people, art and creation. Our role as educators is to help students encounter God, be comfortable in asking thoughtful questions and participating in dialogue about the Catholic faith, traditions and spirituality.
We also worked on further developing ways to help the students unpack scripture to decipher its meaning. Through identifying the type of text the scripture is, establishing the context by discussing the author and intended audience, explaining unfamiliar language and circumstances, we can help the children derive the religious message it contains. Through this recontextualisation of scripture we can help students see relevant implications for us today.
Thanks to all the families who supported our Mothers’ Day stall. Special thanks to Kaye Carew for organising the stall and to Vicky and Judy who assisted. I hope all the mothers, grandmothers and carers had a special day and feel cherished.
Last week the District Athletics was held at Wonthaggi Secondary College. Thanks to Michelle Richards for coordinating the event and congratulations to all the students who participated! Our students showed a great deal of good sportsmanship in encouraging others. We are proud of their efforts.
This Friday we will hold our annual, whole school Cross Country running event. Parents are welcome to attend. We ask that you check in with the displayed QR codes around the school and fill in the Visitor’s sign in sheet which will be just inside the silver gate at the church car park entrance. Please maintain social distancing.
We are very excited that iHour will commence this week. It will occur on Thursday afternoons. This year the students will have a wider variety of activities to choose from as the specialist teachers will also be involved. The choices for the seniors are: Magic, Collaborative Art, Trick Shots, Minecraft Worlds, Lego Masters, Paper Cranes, Line Art, Netball and Physics. The Prep-2 students’ iHour will also look a little different- they will also choose which activity they would like to participate in over the next few weeks. Their choices include: Origami, Science:Solids, Liquids and Gases, Dance, Art: Exploring with paint and natural materials, Team Building Sport, Design and Technology, Visual Arts and Construction.
For your information, the DOSCEL (Diocese of Sale Catholic Education Limited) Secretariat - our governing body, have developed a new Corporate Social Media policy. In line with the policy, it is not appropriate to have a Facebook group (or other form of social media) using the St Joseph's School logo and or name that is not an official account managed by the school under the guidance of DOSCEL.

As always we are busy bees in Grade 1/2. We have been focusing on telling the time to quarter to, quarter past and half past. It has been a little tricky but we are improving week by week.
We hope all the mums and special ladies enjoyed their Mother’s Day cards and gifts and spent the past Sunday relaxing!
1/2 Team
The 3/4 students have had a great start to Term 2. We have started learning about history and the concept of change during our Integrated Studies lessons. We have been learning all about addition and subtraction during maths which we are finding challenging but rewarding. Finally, some of us have been working on a writing piece to enter into the St Joseph's writing competition later this Term.

TRINITY FAMILIES MAY 2021 APPEAL: The Collections will continue for the month of May.
Bishop Greg Bennet has urged the members of the diocese to generously support the annual appeal for Trinity Families, in our parishes this year.
He said “ As good stewards of the gifts that God has given us, we must always find a necessary place for those who need our help. To achieve this, Trinity Families Fund needs to continue to grow its funds so that this mission of service can be more effective. I have been reliably informed that the demand placed upon Trinity Families’ funding in the 2020 COVID year was actually three times more than was available for distribution. It is important to keep to the forefront of our minds that this is our own charity arm specifically set up to serve and support the needs of families in the Greater Gippsland area. While there are many calls upon our donations at this time, what is both worthwhile and unique about Trinity Families is that it is locally based and supports the particular needs of our area.”
Find out how you can make a bequest by visiting www.trinityfamilies.org.au

While God continues to call people to be Shepherds after the heart of the Good Shepherd, please continue to pray that they will be moved to hear the call.
