Every Child, Every Day,
Learning and Achieving in a Faith - Filled Environment
Dear Parents, Students, Staff and all associated with St Joseph’s Community
The term is moving along very quickly. They say that time flies when you are having fun. It is certainly a hive of activity at St Joseph’s and there is no sign of slowing down at the moment. If it weren’t for the cool change of weather, it would be hard to believe that we are about to enter June.
Over the last 2 weeks, we have certainly continued to have a fair number of COVID cases amongst staff and students. We have been stretched at times but are getting there. I am extremely grateful for the St Joseph’s team that works tirelessly to ensure your children continue to learn in an environment that is safe and conducive to meaningful and memorable experiences. Thanks also to Tracy Allan and Joanne Coldebella for their organisation of replacements when staff go down with sickness (be it personal or family). Thank you also to our parents' calmness in these conditions, which has also contributed greatly to your children coming to school in a happy mindset, enabling learning to occur naturally. I can't thank you enough for all of this. You have made a huge difference.
I have mentioned this often but it is always good to put out reminders. Communication is paramount if we are to function effectively and productively. Please ensure that there is open communication with your child's teacher. If a problem arises they are your first port of call. There are no surprises if you keep contact with the class teacher. This relationship is the most important during your child's time in school. Your children are in good hands. Make sure you touch base on a regular basis to ensure the best outcome.
As another reminder, we have an upcoming school closure day on June 10, which is an allocated Religious Education focused day.
Wishing our students every success with all they are doing over the next fortnight.
Yours in Catholic Education
Ronan O’Mahony
Principal
This week in 1/2 we had a special visit from Polly the dog so we could learn how to be responsible pet owners. We learnt how to safely approach and pat a dog. In writing lessons we have been learning how to write procedure texts. We made fairy bread and wrote a procedure explaining the steps. In Integrated Studies we have been learning about how different minibeasts grow and change and what they need to survive. This week one of our Darkling Beetles emerged from its pupa. It was completely white and will slowly get darker until it becomes a completely black adult beetle. One of our leaf insects also moulted this week. It is very exciting to see these life cycles in action.

The Grade 3/4 Students were lucky to have some special visitors visit the 3/4 Neighbourhood over the last fortnight. A very special thanks to our guest speakers Nicola Sampson and Jason Hullick who came in to talk to the 3/4’s about rules and laws. Nicola gave great information about the role the local government plays in helping the community, and Jason spoke to us about how Police Officers uphold the law and serve the community. Jason also showed us some of the 'tools of the trade'.

Over the last couple of weeks 3/4 have had a great time. Firstly we commemorated Sorry day. The 3/4's each did a little colouring square, we found out they were all connected together to make a great little piece of artwork. We have just started to make a stop motion film about rules and laws. We are all very excited for this. Finally, we had two guest speaker's come in and talk to us about rules and laws. We were a Police officers and members from the local council. They told us how they keep us safe in the community and what the local government does for us.

On Friday the 20th of May the 5/6’s went to ScienceWorks! It was a 2 and a half hour drive, but it was worth it! Once we arrived we went to the general area with some really cool experiments. It gave us a sneak peak of our future, with interactive activities like making your own car with turbo boosters, robotic arms and then making yourself a superhero. After the general viewing section, we went to the beyond perception with some mind blowing illusions and extremely relaxing massage chairs. There was also a wall of mirrors. Everyone had to walk with their arms out in front of them so they didn’t hit any mirrors.
After the beyond perception room we went to two different shows. One of them was the lightning room. Where Veronica educated us about where it is safe with lightning, and how electricity works. We also learned what we need to make electricity. We learnt about static electricity too. Veronica made real lighting as well! Piper even got to touch the vandegraph (static electricity machine!)
We went to another show called cool stuff. Cat taught us about boiling, evaporation, freezing and condensation. Cat showed us liquid nitrogen and what happens when you put rubber and plastic into it. Frederick the rubber duck was unfortunately the victim of the liquid nitrogen. If you didn’t know when you put rubber into liquid nitrogen it hardens and if you hit it hard enough it will shatter into 100 pieces.
Lastly, we went to the sports room. In the sports room there was the Kathy Freeman running track, netball activity and a virtual goalie. There was also a skills challenge with lots of activities that tests the skills that you need for all different types of sports like flexibility and strength. Science Works was really amazing and everyone had so much fun. Thank you to all the teachers and parents that helped make this excursion possible.

Ms Egan, Mrs Martin and the School Captains Rubi-Jean, Teerawhat, Olive and Archie have been very busy over the last few weeks. We have been visiting the local kindergartens in our community, as part of the orientation process for our 2023 Prep cohort. The Kinder children enjoyed meeting Milo the Monkey and learning about his favourite letter /m/. It was just wonderful to meet all of the children commencing school next year. A big thank you to the School Captains and the amazing job they did of supporting the Prep teachers on these visits.

We began this week celebrating Catholic Education Week which runs from May 27 to June 3. This year’s theme is Go out into the world and spread the Good News to all creation
We Celebrated with a whole school Mass and invited all our Parents and Friends to attend. We also welcomed Bec from "The Muffin Lady 3996" to make coffees for us prior to our Mass. Following the exhortation of the Holy Father, Pope Francis, and upon the blessing of our local ordinary, Bishop Greg, the leadership of the Sale Diocese Charismatic Groups invites us all to an extra-ordinary experience of the Current of Grace as we celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the Church (Pentecost). As the Lord promised “you will be baptised with the Holy Spirit not many days from now” (Acts 1:5; see also Acts 2:1-4). This promise, Peter says, is for every one of us (Acts 2:39). Friends, this will be an experience you wouldn’t want to miss, and you will never forget. God bless you as we come together to celebrate a new beginning in the power of the Holy Spirit.

- ASSSEMBLY: PLENARY COUNCIL: Keep up with the latest Plenary news:
The Connection between the Plenary Council and the Synod of Bishops.
There has been some confusion amongst people about the Synod and the Plenary Council. In preparation for the 5th Plenary Council of Australia, we have been on a four-year journey of listening, dialogue and discerning what God is asking of us in Australia at this time.
Now Pope Francis is asking us to a similar thing, but together with the entire Church worldwide. As Christ’s church, we are all called to living in a synodal way, attentive to others and ready to walk alongside one another. In your parishes you will have already experienced aspects of living synodally as a faith community. The synodal journey is not something which ends with the Synod of Bishops meeting in Rome in 2023 but is meant to be the way in which we are to be disciples of Christ, bearing his Good News for the transformation of ourselves, the church and the world.
Bishop Shane Mackinlay (the Plenary Council’s Vice-President) is featured in a brief video (1.5 minutes) explaining the connection between the Plenary and the Synod of Bishops.
